ROND Posted November 23, 2006 Report Share Posted November 23, 2006 Suddenly after working fine for years, I unable to access the Internet on one of my 4 PC's.I have a network with four pc's. It is a wired and wireless networkI have 2 desktops (wired only) and 2 laptops (both wired and wireless)the laptops run windows xp home and xp pro(one each)Both of the desktops run win 2000-sp4.all 4 PC's run over the network fine. the 2 laptops access the internet fine, both wired and wireless.One of the desktops accesses the internet fine.one of my desktops can not access the internet. Everything else runs fine on this PC.I have comcast cablethis problem exists with both netscape 7.2 and IE 6.0 browsersI have done the following on the PC that can't access the internet1. uninstalled my firewall (zone alarm pro), my spy sweeper program and my anivirus(Macafee) to no avail2. I disabled my motherboard LAN and replaced it with a D-link ethernet card - to no avail3. My ISP and D-Link tech support say that because all the other network components work except this one PC, it must be a setting somewhere in this particular PC (I can't argue with that logic) . They couldn't help me any more.4. I ran network magic from one of the other PC's and it confirms the network is fine.5. I downloaded spybot from another pc and installed it on the problem pc. it wouldn't run because it wanted to do an update but couldn't because this PC won't get on the internet.6. Uninstalled and then reinstalled netscape. -- to no avail The only left to do that I can think of, is to blow away the hard drive, reformat and reinstall everything.Before I take that drastic step I am hoping someone on this form will have, if not a diagnosis, at least some other things to tryRon Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A couple of questionsCan you see that computer (that cannot connect to the Internet) from other computers?Can that (malfunctioning) computer see other computers on the network?If yes, then the network connection is OK.If notAre your network card drivers functioning correctly?Can you try to issue an ipconfig /all command (from the malfunctioning computer), and see if there is anything out of the ordinary?Not much more ideas; except perhaps - can the various computers ping each other's IP addresses? Yes the (malfunctioning) computer can transfer files both ways from the other computers on the network? yes, I agree that it appears that the network connection is OK. Network magic maps correctly the entire network and displays each computers IP addresses?I can not get network magic to run from the problem computer because it requires an internet update which can't be done from the problem computer. it is the same with spybot also.I was able to do a virus scan over the network. it found no viruses. Spybot and sysweeper would not allow me to scan another computer.It should be noted that if I wait long enough like 5-10 min I can occasionally get to a web site. I did manage to solve the problem. I downloaded a utility from PC world called easyMTU.it resets the parameter in the registry called MTU(max transfer unit) to a suggested value. After running it, everything worked. However I searched the registry for MTU and couldn't find anythingRonDefinitely agree with nellie.
