All of the sudden I cannot choose to view hidden files or folders in the folder options. In the options window, both show and don't show are selected. I can change it but it always goes back to both selected and it is not viewing hidden files and folders. here is a screenshot of what I mean

I have tried a few registry repair tools but still have the same problem. I have WinXP SP2, 512MB RAM, Plll 933MHZ. Thanks

Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!

This is indeed weird - I have never seen anything like this. First thing that comes to mind is: are you sure that you don't have any malware infection? Did you scan for viruses, trojans, spyware?

P.S. you can easily add pictures into the post; you don't need to host them outside of the forum.

Good to have this confirmed.

Did this start very recently?

Did you install something new around that date, or any other changes to your system?

Do you have a system restore available to before that date?

But wait with doing a system restore; maybe someone else has some better idea.

I just recreated the problem with regmon from system internals. I just added a 2 to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL

CheckedValue = 2

which check marks Show hidden files or folders. Oppositely

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\NOHIDDEN

CheckedValue = 2

check marks Do not show hidden files or folders.

All you should have to do to fix it is change one of them values to a 1. Whats even weirder than this weird problem is if you change it to a 0 or 3 (maybe even higher) there are absolutely no check marks? A registry scanner probably wouldn't pick this up unless it looked for this specific problem.

Ok, so that registry mod enabled me change which is selected, either hide or show but it didn't actually change wether or not the hidden files show or not. They are still hidden regardless of what is checked. I just formatted and did a fresh install so for now this post can be laid to rest. I'm just assuming it was a virus.
