Disk/cant install anything..

I have my first hard drive with windows installed onto it so its default for everything. but that drive is full. I also have 5 partitions of my new hd each 50gb and i install any new programs onto those. For some reason I cant install anything because that first drive is full and it constantly reminds me of how my disk is full. My question is that how can I move all my program files to my new program files folder in my empty hard drive. I don't mind deleting the programs..but I would like to move them w/o getting the message. "The program might be in use, so you cant delete it"

Help anybody?

There may be utilities to move installed programs from one location to another, but I don't know any specifics (other forum members might).

You write that your first HD is full (I assume it's the C: drive). Is it so small, or do you have so many data on it? If so, it may be easier to move the data (e.g. My Documents) instead of the installed programs. Also, running CCleaner may help you to free up some space.

"Deleting" programs - you shouldn't do that; always use Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel to remove installed applications. If you get that message when using Add/Remove, then something may have been activated during Windows startup. Check with msconfig what it was, and terminate the process with the Task Manager, then try Add/Remove again.

Well CCleaner helped a lot, i will use that often. But When i open the HD the folders are Doc and Settings and Program Files. Th problem is that the doc and settings is around 2gb. But when I open it the folders sizes aren't even close to 2gb..

Use ExplorerXP to quickly determine the actual size of folders and subfolders' contents.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310147 or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555308 if you decide to move your 'My Documents' folder.

P.S. with ExplorerXP you will be able to see where most of the space on your C: drive is used up.

wooh!

explorerxp helped me delete a 1.5gb big file that I didn't need at all.

However it still shows 300mb free space under the disk D, which is where I deleted the 1.5gb file.

Also there is another file under D:\ called pagefile.sys. Its a system file but not in the Windows folder.

do I need it?

sorry if im confusing

When you say "deleted", do you mean "send to the Recycle Bin"? If so, the file is still on your disk until you empty your Recycle Bin (or run CCleaner, which will do it implicitly).

Regarding pagefile.sys, go to Control Panel, System, tab Advanced, click on Performance Settings, then tab Advanced. Section Virtual Memory, click Change. In here you see where your virtual memory (page file) resides. If it doesn't show drive D:, then you can delete pagefile.sys

Here is also the place where you can move the page file to another drive. Of course you'll need to reboot for the change to take effect.

P.S. if you move your page file, be 100% sure that the new location has at least the same size specified as the original location. You may not be able to start up Windows if the page file size is largely insufficient.

actually the folder was like 1.5gb big.. so it wasnt sent to the recycle bin. It was just deleted.

Im not on my computer right now but i'll check in controlpanel when I go home.

But I dont understand what you mean in the P.s..

Have you tried my earlier suggestion (ExplorerXP) to look at the D: drive? Have you emptied the Recycle Bin?

Re pagefile.sys: the page file may reside on multiple volumes, but from your description it seems to be on your D: drive only. If you have another drive with more free space, you can move it to there.

i used explorerxp and looked at D: and it seems that the folder that I deleted is gone and that its not in the recycle bin either...But my free space is till only 300mb.

For pagefile.sys Im pretty sure that its only on the D: drive. However when I move it, it says that the process is being used. Should I cancel the process, or will that screw up my computer? ( also what is the process?)

Yes, if you have enough disk space. How much do you have now?

P.S. Microsoft recommends that you specify a minimum of 1.5 x your RAM size, but I find that a bit stupid. But that's what I have specified 1GB x 1.5 = 1,536MB.

Ive got plenty of disk space..

I have 1gb of ram, but I changed my virtual memory to 2gb instead of 1.5.

is that ok?

also I know what RAM is but I'm kind of confused on what virtual Ram is?

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/virtual-memory.htm

In short: "virtual" memory is the page file on disk, where "real" memory data is paged out when RAM becomes too full, or applications using it are inactive.

This has been a very old concept since the very early days of computers, when RAM was very expensive and therefore very limited. Nowadays, where many PCs have 1GB or 2GB of RAM, virtual memory is sometimes completely unused (and applications can run much faster).
