I have a secondary computer that runs windows 98 and have recently installed a driver for a digital camera.

Since installing this driver when i rebooted the computer all i get is the wallpapper and no task bar or anything else at all. When i load a cd or floppy disk, the computer doesnt see this. The computer wont allow me to do anything. Could anyone please throw some suggestions my way as to how i can remedy this.

Thank you in anticipation

Welcome to the Windows Forum!

First question: was that driver designed to run under Windows 98? Either way, uninstall that driver and see if this corrects your problem.

Thank you, but how do i uninstall the driver when i only have wallpaper up and cant access the programs? Sorry for being a dummy on this

I was not sure if I should take your user name seriously :)

Can you open the Control Panel (via Start button)? If so, open the System applet, then click on the Hardware tab. Somewhere on there is a button that should let you open the Device Manager applet. In there, if you see your camera, right-click on it, tab Driver, there should be an Uninstall button.

Please report back how it goes. If it is successful, we may attempt to install it again. For this

  1. Make sure that you download the proper driver for Windows 98
  2. Make sure that you exactly follow the install instructions; most such drivers must be installed before you connect the camera

Do you have the rescue disk, that you should have made if you followed the instructions when you originally installed Windows?

Thanks for your help. yes i have put the disc in and the computer does not recognising that or any disk at all as being in the drive.

I think the only option is to go into the settings as it boots up, but i dont know what to look for after that.

right after you boot your machine and right before it goes on saying "Starting Windows 98..." keep pressing F8 key, you'll be presented with a boot menu select "Safe Mode", hopefully this will get you to your gui. now follow Pat Willener's post about the driver.

good luck!
