I finally gave up with the Netgear router, see my previous posts, specially after getting this one.

Oh what fun I have been having. This router was given to me as a Christmas present, though it was not new it had been working perfectly.

I tried to install it some days ago without any success, even though it was showing as Connected in the Belkin wizard, when I typed in an address it came up as I.E cannot display this web page or you have typed an invalid address. Tried to connect to AOL and it never went past Step 1. Off went emails to both Belkin Tech Support and AOL Tech Help, replies duly came back and I started again. Following the instructions, which were very similar, the router was working away merrily within 10 to 15 minutes. Last night, after the computer had been switched off for a couple of hours or so, I tried to sign on to AOL. Only got to Step 1 again, could not get any further, checked with I.E. no connection there either. Messed about with various settings, still no joy sgave up and went to bed instead. Determined it would not beat me I started from the beginning just in case something had been missed first time round. No problem with I.E., that connected easily enough but still could not sign in to AOL. Tried to get to AOL via I.E. and managed to sign in OK but, when I clicked on email, it wouldn't let me in, there was a message along the bottom of the page showing 'done, but some errors in loading'. Went back to the Wizard and checked everything yet again, this time changing from PPPoE to PPPoA. tried AOL again and straight through. Eventually I signed off, after about an hour tried to sign on again, only got to Step1.

Went to the Belkin Wizard and found it was showing 'Not Connected', clicked on the Connect button and it connected immediately, went back to AOL and signed on without any problem. Spoke to a son-in-law about it, the same one who had given it to me, he told me to go to Startup>AOL>check connection. He said this is what he had to do when he installed the router that everything was fine after that. I tried that yesterday and had the router running perfectly all afternoon. Switched back on late evening and nothing, no connection, went to Belkin's set up page and connected through that without any trouble but still could not sign on to AOL. Switched on this morning, away everything went, no problem at all. Had to turn the computer off for something like one and a half hours, turned it back on and nothing again.

So what is wrong,? Anybody know why the connection is dropped, a) when I sign off from AOL and B) as happened yesterday and a today, the I.E connection is also dropped. All I can think of is that I have not done something I should have done, or I've done something wrong. I'm also sure it's something very simple so please don't skip anything because it seems so simple.

I have tried several different things, too numerous to list her, so it's quite likely somebody will suggest something I've already tried. Won't worry about that, just so long as I get the thing working properly.

One thing I have tried is the AOL One-Click Fixes, namely:

Redetect connection devices

Rebuild AOL Adaptor/Delete ACS Files, Restart

Clea Internet Expolorer cache & replace AOL Adaptor, Restart

Did you set your router back to PPPoE instead of PPPoA? Make sure you're using whichever AOL told you to use.

Actually I have conflicting information from AOL. When I was trying to set a Netgear router some time ago I was told PPPoE, with the Belkin I've been told PPPoA so that is what I have been using mostly, to explain that, I've been switching between them to try and find out which one works best, it seems to be PPPoA so I'll stick with that, until somebody tells me otherwise.

For reasons I don't need to go into just now, I've just done a complete reinstall of XP. I will try and get the router set up before loading any programmes, that way I will see if there was/is a programme that was causing the problem.
