Upgrading to Windows XP PRO

I recently purchased what I thought was upgrade disks from Clearance Warehouse in Los Angeles and was unable to perform an upgrade from XP Media Center to XP Pro. Although the dialog screen gave the option to "Upgrade (recommended)", the installation routine would not accept the product key provided with the software. The vendor, when contacted, advised that it was not possible to "upgrade" with the disks I had purchased. I would have to do a "new installation". I chose to return the software and roundly chastised the vendor for selling me software "not as advertised". (I had specifically asked for "Upgrade" disks). So had I chosen to do a "new installation", wouldn't that have required that I reformat the hard drive? I need to use XP Pro because I work on a network with a domain and XP Media Center will not support networks with domains. Thanks for any help. :flowers:
