-pops- Posted February 18, 2007 Report Share Posted February 18, 2007 It varies according to the version of windows you have and the reasons for re-activation.If you have an OEM edition then that is tied to the hardware in the machine it was first installed into, particularly the motherboard so if you change that, you should not be able to re-activate (although it is possible). With other versions it isn't quite as strict and you can reactivate over the Internet several times before you are required to explain yourself to someone at Microsoft. This varies as to the changes that have been made and if the MS person thinks that you are being honest and are not trying to install on more than one machine (which doesn't matter very much as that will be revealed that next time there are Windows updates or some such and two or more computers with the same ID are activated - or not). It may reach a point if your do it too often that you will be required to contact Microsoft live (telephone) and they may give you a new Product Key to keep you going through more activations. The difficulties can arise with OEM versions if you try to install on another machine - that is one that is not recognised in the records that MS have of that copy of Windows.
