telling me one thing - doing another

I'm trying to get 2 PCs to share an internet connection. I have tried several times using the network wizard using different names for the PCs and the workgroup, I've tried making the other one the host, and that didn't work either. I've tried every shutdown sequence I can think of and ultimately I can ping the client from the host but not the other way round, even though ipconfig/all suggests it is all in order.

I get them manually configured to 169.254.183.1 - 255.255.0.0 and 169.254.183.3 - 255.255.0.0 (the client one comes in as 0.0.0.0 - 0.0.0.0 when rebooted, so I have to do that) but still I can't 'see' the host and can't get to share the internet. Both are XP Home. Any suggestions?

I have a similar setup.

IP = IP Address

DG = Default Gateway

DNS = Domain Name Service

Host:

IP: 192.168.0.1

DG: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 192.168.0.1

Client1:

IP: 192.168.0.4

DG: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 192.168.0.1

Client2:

IP: 192.168.0.12

DG: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 192.168.0.1

I should also mention that on the Host machine, it has two network cards (bridged). I also went into the bridge connection, and set the option; "register DNS suffix in DNS registration" Not sure if that had anything to do with it, but it works so I left it alone. All computers have manually set IP addresses as I had problems with the DHCP.
