Windows 98 AGP problem

I did a fresh install of windows 98se and set about installing all the drivers. But, I can't install drivers for my nvidia graphics card. As soon as I start running the forceware install program I get a window titled nvidia setup error. It says "Setup was unable to locae any nvidia graphics chips on this system. The installation will be terminated. OK.

Hit the Ok button and the program reverts back to the desktop. I stuck an old pci graphics card in after changing the video card bios selector from agp to pci. The system saw that card just fine and the forceware installed and ran the card.

Then I go through the same process to stick the AGP card in. Same deal--it will not see the AGP card.

Windows XP sees it just fine.

Oh, I want to do this so that I can play some old games that use my microsoft force feedback stick.

Have you installed these drivers previously on Win98? Are you sure they are for Win98?

When I had to reinstall Win9x in the past (and I did that a great number of times), I always used the Batch 98 Setup tool. It remembers all the drivers and settings from the previous installation, and you don't need to manually install any drivers - it's all done during the initial setup.

Thanks for asking. This is a new graphics card and I'll go to Nvidias site and make sure the driver is the correct one.

Yes, I have the proper driver for windows 98. I re-downloaded it and tried to run it. Got the same results. Windows 98 just seems unable to see the card. Here is a thought. The card is an 8X AGP. do you suppose that windows 98 can't see an 8X card? Here is something else weird. To get windows to run at all I had to take out my 1 gig stick of memory and just used 256 Mb. With the 1 gig stick in there windows keeps re-booting--going through the post, then the 98 splash screen, then back to posting. I think that I might be s-o-l for playing mech warrior with that forcefeed back stick.....
