Need to edit boot.ini without booting to Windows

I was attempting to install Ubuntu, and ended up messing up my Windows installation.

Right now, my Windows XP Professional installation is on partition 3. However, the boot.ini file (if I open it in the recovery console) says partition 1. Thus, Windows will not boot, giving me an error about hal.dll. Basically, my understanding is that I need to open boot.ini and change the 1s to 3s. Unfortunately, I see no way to do this in the recovery console, and I cannot boot to Windows.

In Ubuntu, the file is read-only, so I can't edit it.

I have tried bootcfg and its various methods--they all fail.

If you can help me with finding a way to edit boot.ini from the recovery console or without booting windows, that would be great.

It can be done but you need to do a bit of reading.

After you have read the disk part and downloaded it, burn it to disk and read the Quick solutions, that will solve your problem.

See this article for information what commands you can use in the Recovery Console. You could rename the original boot.ini file, then copy it from somewhere else (floppy disk).
