kdasummer
I'm trying real hard to connect 2 computers through a switch. I've tried almost everything, and i can't even get internet if i plug in the modem. This is what i've tried so far:sat both computers to be in the same workgroup. They can see eachother, but i can't ping from the one pc to the other. Nor can i access the other pc's shared folders. When i try to access the other computer i get a "path not valid" or something, don't know what message you get in the english version since i'm using the danish windows xp. Also when i try the "net send" command to send a message to other computer it says that the computer's alias doesn't exist in the network, even though "net view" finds it.used the windows wizard to set up the OS for lan. Didn't work. Tried all sorts of combinations in the wizard.i've installed all the necessary clients, servers and protocols for the netcard. on both computers. Also tried with the IPX protocolthingy. Didn't help.Tried giving each computer a static ip.Computer 1:IP: 10.0.0.1Subnet: 255.255.255.0Computer 2:IP: 10.0.0.2Subnet: 255.255.255.0Tried to ping from one computer to another, didn't work. Pinged the computers own IP (10.0.0.1) - successful. The switch i'm dealing with has worked before but the manual has gone. There's absolutely no information on the switch witch could give me any clue about where to find the manual. All it says is: 5-Port 10/100 Mpbs N-Way Switch, and that give's alot of results on google.I'm all out of ideas here. What have i done wrong?? Scarecrow Man
I believe a switch requires a cross-over cable. Which type of cabling are you using?
kdasummer
I have no idea. But i connected the cable from the one PC to the other one, gave them both a static ip and suddenly i could ping and play over LAN. How can i see if a cable is crossover? And isn't it only possible to connect 2 computers together with a crossover-cable?What do i have to do if i want internet too? there's a fifth port on the switch which is separated from the other four, is this the one i should connect my modem to? cozofdeath
At the rj45 connectors you will be able to see the colors of the wires. The cross over cable will have a different color scheme on one connector than the other. A straight through cable will have similar wire colors on the connectors. The port you say that is singled out is probably the uplink port. You should use this port to connect to your modem with a straight cable. There may also be a tiny button/switch on your switch that enables the uplink port to work as a straight cable. In other words that would be what you want. Sorry if this is confusing. Check this short page out form a very good description and diagrams for help.http://www.homenethelp.com/web/explain/abo...t-crossover.asp
