nfs23 Posted March 16, 2007 Report Share Posted March 16, 2007 hey im having a problem connecting to the internet with one of my desktops. I have it so that it automatically receives an ip address. It receives only a class b private address and a subnet. Ive pinged my nic and it is in perfect working order. But for some reason i am not able to connect to the internet. I know its not my Ethernet cable because i can access the internet with my laptop but it doesn't work when i connect it to my desktop.Any help on how to get my connection up and running would be appreciated. mcb2001 Posted March 16, 2007 Report Share Posted March 16, 2007 Well, if you use IE6 or IE7, you can go into the options, select connection settings, and then try and set it to "no dial up" "connect through LAN" - and in LAN settings use "select connection automatically, or run the guide that pops up, from the "setup connection" button.If its firefox, i suggest that you start IE, runs the guide, and let it setup windows correctly... mcb2001 Posted March 18, 2007 Report Share Posted March 18, 2007 EDIT: This aint the case, since your laptop works fine --> thats your router, that usually acts as localhost DHCP, so it there your problem is... or in the settings you selected on you desktop, for network adress retrieving...Go to the "start menu" - "settings" - "network" - Right click the LAN connection (if you got multiple, select the one with the cable in it ofc) select "options" or "settings" or what ever its called...Then you get a new window up, with (usually) 4 icons. Select Internetprotocol TCP/IP then click settings right below it.At the settings window, select "get ip adress automatically" and "get DNS automatically", press "okay"Then press okay at the LAN settings window.reboot the computer, and see if you get an ip adress.Do the three steps from the previous post, and see if you still get the error.If you still get the error, write back, and i'll try to guide you through some of the more advanced settings you could have messed with. Alexis Blaze Posted March 18, 2007 Report Share Posted March 18, 2007 did your computer connect directly or through the laptop?? if it is directly that means that you use use one modem on several computer... try restarting your modem, coz a modem will "remember" the last computer it give an address too, and if it switch to another computer it will not give an address to that computer...if you already got an address and still can't access the internet, try this :- open a command prompt- type "tracert www.google.com" without quote (you can replace google with anything you like)- see the result for tracert and decide where the connection got rejected.. post it here if you don't understand the resultonce you got the result, post it here so we can figure out where's the problems is..
