Jayno Posted March 25, 2007 Report Share Posted March 25, 2007 Hello teamNot been here for a while, but glad you are still around in spite of ceased services etc!My PC is starting to get very slow in opening up and processing its browser (IE and Firefox) and email client (BARCA) so, after running a defrag and full AV and Spyware Doctor scans I have been looking at my Task Manager.There's a lot of processes in there, including several that, according to this site: http://www.tasklist.org/... are nasties that I should get rid of. e.g. alg.exe ; CCEVTMGR.EXE ; cccrss.exe ; Isass.exe ; rundII32.exe ; services.exe ; svchost.exe ; I have two problems with this:1. If I paste the "nasty" file name for some of these into google it takes me to Microsoft, where itoften tells me they are generic files with normal functions! I think the issue is that some of them are innocent but can get corrupted by nasties, but how do I know what to do with them?2. I wonder why, if they are nasty NAV and Spyware Doctor haven't identified them for fixing?Any ideas what to do? nellie2 Posted March 25, 2007 Report Share Posted March 25, 2007 It really depends on where those files are running from as to whether they are nasty or legitimate. They are legitimate Windows system files... but malware will name it's nasty files the same to try to put you off the scent so to speak.What you need to do is get rid of all your temp files and bloaty stuff. CCleaner is very good for this.Then have a look at what is running on startup... perhaps you could disable a few things that aren't necessary. Startup Inspector is very user friendly. If you want to have a real dig about and find out what is using up your resources then Process Explorer is excellent... although it can take a little while to get the hang of it Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Cookies and Windows Cleaner' I have just downloaded and run the cc cleaner you recommend and running it has cleared out 43mb of stuff and sorted 51 "issues". My mail client is already a bit perkier. Browser a bit better.I'll look at the Task Manager programmes a bit later. nellie2 Posted March 26, 2007 Report Share Posted March 26, 2007 If you look towards the bottom of the process explorer page there is a webcast showing how process explorer can be used to eliminate malware... but it will give you a good insight into what it can do and tell you and is fascinating to watch anyway.
