Remote Desktop and Echo Request

Symptoms:

After installing Windows XP with Service Pack 2, your computer does not respond to echo requests (ping) or Remote Desktop Connection (RDP / MSTSC).

Resolution:

Enable both services under the network connection properties by following the steps outlined in this guide.

1. Load up your network connection so that you can see the following dialog.

2. Click "Properties.

3. Click the "Advanced" tab.

4. Click "Settings" .

5. Click the "Advanced" tab.

6. Tick the network connection you wish to edit.

7. Click "Settings".

8. Tick "Remote Desktop"

9. Click the "ICMP" tab and then tick "Allow incoming echo requests"

10. Click "OK" on all dialog boxes that are open to save the changes.
