win98 help

Recommended Posts

I apologize in advance for not searching first,

Here is the situation. A friend of mine of the female persuasion has a late 90's PC with win98 OS. She's got verizon DSL coming and the PC has no NIC card. It's been quite a few years since She's even turned the thing on so the updates (what there is of them) are way out of date. I have a NIC card, a 3COM . It's been a few years for me since I had to deal with such an old system. I can't get her PC on the net until I can get a NIC card installed. The card is a PCI 3COM card, C905Dxx somthing or other. I tried the 3COM site and got the latest drivers, those only had the drivers up to a C50xxx drivers, and they did not work. It's a catch 22, If I had the PC on the internet, I could update pretty easily, but can not until I get a NIC card in.

Is it possible to get the latest WIN98 updates, place them on a CD, and run them to get the latest updates and drivers ( on a seperate, modern machine), burn to a CD, and run on this old piece of crap? (without being on the internet)

Or failing that, get drivers that work on WIN98 with a 3COM 3C905Dxx card? (PCI type)

If this is not possible, I have an older PCI nic card coming (thank you ebay) and hopefully the OS will regognize this, but I will appreciate any forthcoming help and wil be actively searching tomorrow.

BTW, this is myfirst post here. I program chips (silicon, not potato), but am not in the cleaning ladies union (don't do Windows). Hope someone will help out who knows this stuff of the top of their head. IF not, have a great morning:)

Andy
