OK... Our wireless router died last night. So, off we went today and purchased a new one.... A Zoom X6.

Finally managed to set up the desktop pc to the router. However, even with the 'help' from the local supplier, we can't connect the laptop via the wireless connection!! :cray:

It appeared to work ok until I encrypted the destop. Now, even though I have entered the 'Key' code on the laptop, it still will not connect. :censored:

Someone PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you using WPA or WEP? I suggest WPA or WPA2 if your Router and your Network Card support it. Don't configure both!

Double check the keys on the Router and the Network Card.

If you use WPA, or WPA2, you can get a long, random key here (choose the 63 character ASCII password). Copy and paste the key from Steve Gibson's secure site into notepad, then into the configuration page of the computer and the Router. Don't send the key over the wireless connection! Copy the file to a USB drive, a floppy, or via network using a cable connection.

Thanks for responding, homecomputeraid.

With some assistance from the shop where I purchased the router, I have already set up the WEP encryption. Do you think I should change that to WPA or WPA2?

I am a complete and utter novice, as far as networking and routers are concerned.

If I stay with the WEP option, my problem is this...

The laptop can 'see' the encrypted secure wireless network, but when I press connect and enter the Network Key, it just looks for some time then says it's unable to connect. :uhm:

Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Do you live in a rural setting where you'd notice someone nearby, or in a urban or suburban area with neighbours who are close enough to connect easily?

In either case, WEP is better than keeping it open, but WPA or WPA 2 are much more secure if configured properly (with a long random password).

Glad you're working for now though! :D

We are about a mile out of town and at the end of a small cul-de-sac. There is an estate of houses nearby.

I was unable to persuade the laptop to connect, so I took it and the router to the Supplier. He somehow fixed it (wanted to charge us £20, but settled for £10). :( . It couldn't have been very much because it was done in no time at all.

Still, all's well that ends well, so they say.

Finally, would it be possible to change to WPA or WPA 2, if it were deemed to be for the best? I wouldn't want to screw it up again!

It's really up to you Irene.

It sounds like you live in an area where someone could break into your wireless network without it being obvious to you.

If you want to have some extra security, you could configure WPA or WPA2.

I would do my best to help but it could take your wireless offline until you get some extra help again.

Sincerely,

All seems to be going fine at present, so I think I'll let it 'be' for now.

Many thanks for your support, it has been very much appreciated. :flowers:
