Raddy
I have a DVD burner capable of 20x burning, I have blank DVDs capable of 16x burning, I'm using Roxio EMC and burning an image file from my hard drive, the Roxio settings have it set at 16x write speed, but when I burn it, it tops out at ~1.7x burn speed. Any ideas what would cause this?
Raddy
Also, to clarify, I have the most recent firmware and have enabled DMA for all IDE controllers.
mcb2001
to be honest.Usually cheap medias promise "up" to 16 speed burning available, but most drives just wont burn on them that fast.So my first suggestion is to try an expensive media.Second suggestion ill give, is try deepburner - its free, and usually rather good at burning simple audio and data medias. Scarecrow Man
I agree with MCB on this one. Nearly ALL blank media says "Up to __X" This does not mean you are guaranteed to have this speed for every burn. You can run tests on the speed of your drive/media. This website provides some good information on Nero's Speed Test software.http://www.cdspeed2000.com/
Raddy
I've tried what you guys suggested, but still no luck. However, I may have found the root of the problem. I previously enabled DMA on all IDE channels, but when I went to double check it, this is what I found:The first IDE ChannelThe second IDE ChannelEven though I enabled "DMA if Available", it's still listing PIO as the method of data transfer. I looked at the BIOS, but it doesn't have any options about DMA/PIO. I'm not sure which IDE channel is connected to which device, but the only two IDE devices I have are a CD burner and the DVD burner in question. I have the drives set to Cable Select, but I'm pretty sure the DVD burner is the master. I don't know if this offers any more clues, but I appreciate any further help. mcb2001
well, you actually dont need to setup either DMA or anything else to get full burn speed...Most older protocols offer more then sufficient bandwidth...So what i am saying is:I have no clue about why you burn slowly... Rebel=UK=
i know the copy protection starforce has been known to set your drive in pio mode, it can break the drive if not set back. Do you play games? This is from the boycott starforce site:one of the common problems brought by Starforce: under Windows XP, if packets are lost during the reading or writing of a disk, XP interprets this as an error and steps the IDE speed down. Eventually it will revert to 16bit compatibility mode rendering a CD/DVD writer virtually unusable. In some circumstances certain drives cannot cope with this mode and it results in physical hardware failure (Most commonly in multiformat CD/DVD writer drives). A sure sign of this step down occurring is that the burn speeds will get slower and slower (no matter what speed you select to burn at). Starforce, on a regular basis, triggers this silent step down. Until it reaches the latter stages most people do not even realise it is happening.have a quick look here http://www.glop.org/starforce/detect.php
