L1k3t
Eventhough I do NOT start msn messenger or outlook express, I appear online to all my contacts, and they are able to mess me, everytime I turn on my computer. I've unchecked the boxes in messenger options and outlook express, and there is no messenger icon in the systray, or any evidence of messenger running. I still get messages from my contacts, who say I appear online to them. WTF!??!?
Guest moon
Hi , L. What's your firewall ? 'Outpost' will put you into stealth mode while you get rid of the Messenger crap.http://www.agnitum.com/download/outpostfree.htmlFree.
L1k3t
Well, I'm using ZA, and i'm in full stealth mode. But that is not the problem. I frequently use messenger and wish to continue doing so. But at the time of MY choosing, not as soon the computer starts.
Guest Nellie2
What o/s are you using? Is it XP by any chance which comes with MSN 5 that attaches itself to everything? Why not uninstall it and install the new MSN 6 and see if that solves your problem?

Scarthy © ® ™
Hi ;),Are you sure that you haven't given out your details, and someone else is using your account??? If you have ever used another computer to log into your account, then it could have your passport details saved !Messenger programs have to be logged into. If you are not logged into messenger, then someone else probobally is...Especially when you don't have an active system tray icon or OE loaded !;)
L1k3t
No, I've never logged onto messenger on any other computer than my own, and I'm totally sure of that. However, I've logged on to my hotmail account on other computers, which is the one I use with messenger, but never allowed saving of my passport details.Anyhow, is there any way to check if someone is actually using my passport account? Guest LB
simply try changing your password. If your account has been compromised then the offender will have no way of knowing your new password and will subsequently be unable to log into your account. peter e
I assume you have "Allow automatic sign in when connected to the internet" unchecked. If so try this...Click here and scroll down to the "Accepted answer" sent in by Hoggs.Pete
Guest ellas
nice one peter e I've copied it as it may be usefulOn Windows XP Professional:Click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Manage Passwords. In Stored User Names and Passwords, click Passport.Net\*, and then click Remove. This does not delete your Passport, but it prevents automatic sign-ins, even if you select the Allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet check box on the General tab of Messenger Options.Click Close, and then click OK. Scarthy © ® ™
Nice tip peter e/ ellas !The trouble with messenger is that once you access your, or any account, the sign in name is saved in the drop down menu that you are presented with at sign-in, so all a person has to do is guess a password...If the person knows you then it shouldn't be too hard to guess. I would do as Lived Backwards suggests and change your password.Oh and heres the process for Windows XP Home Users...(slightly different) - I just click 'Start' and select the picture I have in the start menu for my account...;)On Windows XP Home Edition:Click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts Click the picture that is associated with your account. Under Related Tasks, click Manage my network passwords. In the Stored User Names and Passwords dialog box, click Passport.Net\*(Passport), and then click Remove. Click OK, and then click Close.;)
L1k3t
more problems....I decided, as Nellie2 suggested, to uninstall my 4.7 version, and install the new. 6.0. Hmmm, seems like 4.7 did NOT uninstall very well, couse now I have 2 freakin' messenger running..................First of all i went in the add/remove programs and uninstalled some add-on for messenger. Then add/remove win-components to remove messenger. OK, so far so good, no messenger in start menu... I installed 6.0 and launched it. All seemed fine, until I opened OutlookExpress, and discovers that it starts up the old 4.7 version, paralell to the 6.0 vers.....I go into explorer and sees that the old messenger folder is still there. So, how do I uninstall my old messenger.....????Havn't had the chance to check the "online-without-signing-in" yet, but this is really getting to annoy me....... Guest Nellie2
Hmmm........ had a look at M$ knowledge base. Looks like the messenger that has attached itself to outlook etc is Windows messenger as opposed to MSN messenger. And Microsoft being microsoft won't let it uninstall.....but you can disable it.knowledge base article
L1k3t
Nellie2, I had a look at the article, followed it and it didn't work =(Seems like the difference between Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger isn't too obvious. Both use, as I understand, my .NET passport, look almost exactly the same(icon, gui, etc.), and have the same purpose and functionality.Anyway, it seems like I have them both installed (eventhough I really tried to uninstall one of them, right or wrong, I don't know, I just need one of them ;-)).I'll look into this further tomorrow, it's 01:04 AM here now, and I'm off to work in the morning so......thanks for all the replies, I will return ;-)
bvw
If you have XP then you only need Windows Messenger and not the MSN version. How do I uninstall MSN Messenger if I have problems? To uninstall MSN Messenger:Click the MSN Messenger icon in the taskbar, and then click Exit. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select MSN Messenger from the list and click the Add/Remove button.http://messenger.msn.com/Help/#LQ6
