Disk read error (may be due to OC)

I came home one day to see a blank screen with the windows background and a error box that said "error"

I try to restart and it says that one of my hard drives in my RAID 0 is not functioning properly. When it tries to start windows it gives a disk read error.

I try to boot from the windows CD, and when I get to the recovery console screen, it freezes before I can type anything in. One time it didn't even make it that far, and it gave me a 0x00000050 error. Another time I actually got to the command prompt, and when I ran a chkdsk, it froze at 2%.

I recently overclocked my computer, but I have ran 3dmark06 and games on it for hours without any problems. I undid my overclocking so everything is running at stock speed, but it still gives me problems. Does this sound like one of my hard drives simply failed? How can I figure this out if I cant get to a command prompt.

I also understand how risky raid 0 is, but for me its worth it and i'll do it again if I have to.

update: after a very long time I was able to type in dir in the conosole, and it tells me "an error occurred during directory enumeration

I don't have much experience with RAID 0, but it just sounds like one of the hard drives failed.

hmm so it sounds like this is a unrecoverable error. How can I tell if its a physically damaged disk, or if it has a bad sector or something that can be fixed with a format?

You would format it, and if it works, then it was a bad sector. If not, the drive is probably dead and you'd want to try an install on one of the HDs to see which one is the bad one.

Or if you want to potentially save your data, you could run:

chkdsk /r

from console, and that will check for bad sectors and recover any readable information.
