Raddy
I got a call from a friend last night (who is a DJ) and he was having trouble with his 1TB external. After I took a look at it, I realized that one of the four 250GB drives had failed. I told him that he would need to replace the faulty drive. What I wasn't sure about is, can he save the data on the other three drives? I haven't been able to find detailed specifications on his particular brand (listed below), so I wasn't sure what to tell him. Do externals like this typically run their drives in RAID 0 or JBOD? If can save him from having to format the other three drives, it would be helpful.Beyond Micro Drivezilla 1TB
Eight-Oh-Eighty-Eight
I'm not sure what the typical external hard drive does as far as RAID, but I'm pretty sure that this one does not protect data. I looked at the web site and at the manual and it seems that if it was able to restore itself like a RAID 5 it would advertise that. Also since it failed when one drive failed, it seems like it's not a RAID or RAID-like solution. If I were you I would plug in another drive and see what it does. If your friend really needs his data to be protected from drive failure I'd recommend Drobo. Great article here, buy it here. Or they could simply get a RAID 5 or JBOD external enclosure. Since you already have the dives, I'd just look for an enclosure and save some bucks.-8088
