dricos
Hi,I have a problem regarding XML files on Windows Explorer.I work with big XML files (more thant 100 Mo). When I try to access a directory containing several of these files, Explorer.exe seems to scan XML files and takes 50% to 90% of my CPU. At first, the icon of the XML files is one of an unknown file, until after some time, one after another, the icon of each files turns to the default XML file icon (see attached printscreen). Once all icons have changed, the CPU goes back to normal processing load. Each time I try to manipulate a XML file (move, copy, rename, etc... ), it's the same. I tested that on several machines and it's always the same. Has anyone any idea of what is going on and how to avoid that. It's pretty annoying when I have to wait 10 minutes until explorer decides I can work again. Thanks in advance for any answer that could help me.dricos
Scarecrow Man
This may not help, but it is worth a try:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/132668/orTo clear the icons cache make sure you can view hidden files and then open your Windows directory in Explorer and delete the file called "ShellIconCache". When you restart Windows the icon cache file will be automatically recreated.

I think Windows is parsing the XML files, for any reason, maybe to check that it is a valid XML file or something like that, and when it's done, then it changes the icon. What I am looking for is an explanation of what Windows is doing scanning the XML files, and how to avoid it.Thanks for your help anyway. I am going to try this cache thing, just to be sure. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Are you sure it is Windows, and not some anti-malware scanner? To circumvent, maybe you could create a folder of shortcuts to the original files?

I thought it could be my antivirus (I use Nod32)but in that case, a nod32 process would load the CPU, not explorer.exe.
