can still email with OE but site vanished

if you look at

this topic you will see that the web site is apparently off line or even moved to ..dont know where

my intrigue is this

when my BT page went off line neither my mailwasher nor my OE could see into it (log into it) to check for messages ; I knew something was wrong :(

what I cannot yet understand is.......if the talkgas page IS off line then how can I still e mail from within OE and check for mails on server via mailwasher AND mail from within oe succesfully and still get spam mails to that server

what IS mailwasher logging into and OE if the page is not available?

showing my total ignorance of this ;what DO the pop and smtp thingis 'do' :(

can someone please explain this annomaly for me?

If the Talkgas page is offline then obviously they are using another server to receive and pass on your mail from.

I dont think they are as no one can tell us the address they ARE using;

but; to answer my actual question to what DOES the pop and smpt thing refer and how CAN it log into an adress that is off line?

Don't know about your e-mail notifications but here are the explanations of POP and SMTP:

It's impossible for anyone to send or receive e-mails when not online so there must be a server involved somewhere.
