Windows XP startup problem

Hello Windows Forum members. I've got a problem...

OK, here's the story:

Yesterday evening I closed the lid of my laptop (an Acer Aspire 5024) to put it on standby. Later on, when I went to bed, I noticed that my laptop was being quite noisy (all fans were on). I opened the lid, and saw that the system had note gone into standby mode. It was in the login screen, but no user icons to choose. I was quite tired, so I just pressed the on/off button to shut down the laptop forcefully.

On the next morning, I opened the lid of my laptop, and discovered that it was already in the boot screen. I waited for some minutes, but nothing happened, so I restarted through the on/off button.

Then the screen where different windows modes (start normally, safe mode, etc) can be selected showed up. I chose "start normaly", and windows stated to load. Again I waited for several minutes, but windows didn't start (It justed showed the boot screen)

I restared again, but chose to start in safe mode this time. All drivers that were loaded were listed:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\perc2.sys

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\perc2hib.sys

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\hpn.sys

etc

etc

etc

Then this happens. This driver load:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\agpCPQ.sys

and then:

"Press Esc to cancel loading of d347bus.sys"

Then everything stops, whether I cancel loading the driver or not.

What could be happening? Is there a way to solve the problem without losing what's stored in C: ? I have really important things in my hard drive, please help me :cray:

Well, been a long time since i had to do this, but boot with either "stepwise selection" of the drivers and dont load any, or try and boot with "shift", "alt" or "win-key" pressed while starting in safe mode - since i cant remember which one is the one to boot without drivers, to get it booted, and recovered to before the problem accoured, or to find out what the actuall problem is...

How do I use this "stepwise selection"?

I tried booting in safe mode pressing alt, then again with shift, windows-key, and once more pressing ctrl. In all tries, the drivers loaded as described in my first post, and then stopped =S

Am I supposed to press the key during boot, or hold the key when I select the mode?

Well, to answer your first question - well, if you get to the "stepwise selection" or what ever its called in the english version (i am running the danish version)

you will be prompted for each and every driver, whether to load it or not - select only those you actually know for a fact that they are working - it takes quite some time, but can get you started to localize the error.

About the safe-mode no driver thingy - when i thought about it, it might actually only work in older versions of windows... but you should hold the key all the way during boot up to the selection screen if this appears, and then continue to hold it while loading - if it doesn't work, i am kinda out of ideas

Except of course to put in a windows cd and try and do a recovery of the install...
