Windows 2003 RC2 very slow

Hi there,

Normally I'm a Unix/Linux engineer, but I have to slove a problem with a Windows2003 server where I can't solve the problem.

I'm used to have logs of everything, but MS logging is very basic.

This particular server are running the following daemons:

1. AD

2. DNS

3. Terminal server

4. Winner (ERP software)

5. File storage

The problem is as followed:

After restarting the server, I have to enable Write cache on the 2 Sata disks for performance. If I don't do this, the server is very very slow.

The first few hours this server is still pretty slow, but after a few hours the server's performance is pretty good.

Nothing has changed the past 2 weeks since this problem starts and ahve really no clue what to do. I've put even 16GB of RAM in the machine with the same slow performance at startup in the first few hours.

The CPU is very low, so no problems with the processor.

Hardware:

1. Intel S5000Psl motherboard

2. Intel Xeon 2GHZ

3. 16GB DDR2 RAM - 8GB effective

I am not an expert on Windows 2003 Server, but I would just start with the usual things when Windows is performing slow.

• make sure the system is free of malware
  
• check for unnecessary startup items; Startup Inspector is a very useful tool for that
  
• defragment all disk drives / partitions
