do we have to switch off or can we just disable?

hello folks. We have to go and help friends get a secure wireless network running on their two computers and would appreciate a few guidelines.

I tried it the other day and made a bit of a mess of it, so have been reading up.

I think I read that you have to switch all client machines OFF while setting up WPA-PSK on the router. this might be a bit awkward and we wondered if it would be enough simply to disable wireless on the other machine until we had the security established. Can you advise please? Both machines are XP. We currently have one machine connected via ethernet without any problems.

I've set up wireless networks and never switched anything off in the way you are suggesting is necessary.

I get the prime computer working via Ethernet (as you have) then, if necessary, set access codes/passwords/wireless keys according to the procedure required by the router, After that I apply those codes and keys to the satellite machines - one by one and make sure it's operating before moving on to the next.

I would suggest that, if possible, you keep the prime machine in the network connected by Ethernet as that is much more reliable than wireless.
