Verifying Windows Product Activation

I have a version of Windows Server 2003 that has been sitting around, and I am not sure if it has already been installed/activated. I don't want to go through the hassle of installing it and then trying to activate it, and find out it already has been.

Is there a way to check?

In my case it was because I found an XP disk in an opened pack, but which also had its COA sticker with it, in my spares box. I thus thought that either I'd had a senior moment when building a machine and not provided the disk/COA with it or that it was new and unused and for some reason its envelope had been opened.

When I enquired of MS they entered the product key into their database and it turned out that it was an unused disk. I installed it in my next build and it activated with no problems whatsoever.
