Nt 4.0 A/c Access To Windows 2003.net

Recommended Posts

Hello phate. I think the simple answer to your question is yes they can. However, we then get to the difficult part, actually making it happen, and that will depend on several factors.

Are the two servers currently in seperate domains? If so do they need to stay that way?

If they do, you will need to get some form of migration tool and transfer the users and rights/permissions between the servers.

If not, then you should by now have already added the nt server into the domain, and at that point the pdc should have already started to replicate the database of users. Depending on how it's set, you may need to tell it to replicate, but it should bring all the other users into the domain.

If you need any further info, please post back with some more specific information regarding your network(s) and I shall try to obtain the info you need.

Regards. Mr. Mouse.

Hello again phate, for the benefit of other users, it is best if you post questions and information to the Forum, rather that private mail. That way the question can be answered and viewed by all. I would only use PM's for anything personal.

I shall post the contents of your PM in open view, as I cannot see any reasons why you would not wish this to be shown.

Thanks for that info, very much appreciated. This is how the situation stands.

We currently have a existing NT domain and a AD DOMAIN. We have a mixture of Users with NT accounts and some with AD accounts as well. Our concerns are when we start to move away from NT completely to AD. What sort of problems may arise in doing so when moving the existing accounts across.

Any thoughts would help a great deal.

Many Thanks

Phate

p.s What are thoughts on logon scripts created in VB?

Right to try and answer your questions. First I can see no real problems when migrating your users from one domain to another. Obviously you will need to ensure that any resources the older users had have been replicated or replaced with something appropriate in the new domain. If your old shares were done with unc paths, then you should have no problems at all redirecting things. The biggest problems I have seen with this sort of change, is where everybody had all the mappings done on the local machine :( Aarrgghh what a nightmare. In this scenario, you will obviously have to go round your network and find out exactly what everybody was using, then create all the shares and scripts yourself.

As for part 2, I have never even considered the need to write scripts in VB, but personally cannot really see the need.

Regards. Mr. M.
