Windows won't make any sounds

My computer running Windows XP recently stopped making sounds of any kind. I first noticed this when I was playing music in Windows Media Player and it stopped. I thought it was a problem with WMP, but there are no system sounds now, either, and other audio players such as RealPlayer are silent as well.

I have tested my speakers by connecting them to my MP3 player and they still work properly. I have checked all the volume settings I can find in Windows and none of them are muted. I have no other ideas about how to fix this, and it is incredibly annoying. Can anyone help?
