cisco router & switch setup

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am 1 day in to starting a 6 month course for my CCNA.

The hardware i have bought is .

2 X cisco 1603r routers

1 x cisco catalyst 1900 series switch

1 x broadband modem (sb4200 cable modem( telewest )

4 x computers

The problem really is i don't understand how to set them up, this is what i have tried.

i brought a black box which i have connected to the serial port on router 1, i then connected an ethernet cable from my cable modem to the black box,I then connected an ethernet cable from the 10base rj45 jack on the router to computer 1,

but doing this i don't have an internet connection so i was wandering is this because i need to set the router up some how?

I then thought how am i going to incorporate my switch so i decided to remove the cable that went from the 10base on the router to the computer and have it going from the router to the switch and from the switch to the computer. But still i don't have an internet connection.I am very new to this cisco setup and i am completely lost,I used to have a linksys router which just connected all my pc together easily.I have searched the net all over looking for a setup tutorial for someone one who has a cable modem, but no luck.If anyone can give me some guidance on this i would appreciate it.I would be happy to leave a couple of my computers out of the setup for the time being if i could just learn how to incorporate my router switch and 2 PC's so I'm on the net.It would seem there are hundreds of tutorials once you are allready setup but very few for actually connecting the hardware together.

Best Regards Nige.
