ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Although it is not ranking high on the gourmet scale of the Japanese cuisine, okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes) can be a lot of fun, especially when going out with youngsters. However, chef Takeshi Sekimoto’s new venue Tsuki-mi allows adults to have fun with okonomiyaki too. The small restaurant with 7 teppan tables is located in Hiroo shotengai, between the real estate agent and massage parlor, on the second floor. Instead of letting customers messing up perfectly good food, Sekimoto runs from table to table and cooks up beautiful teppanyaki, monja, okonomiyaki, or yaki soba. There is a Tsukimi course (¥3,500 – contains Tsuki dashi, salad, grilled scallop, pork, steak, chicken-cheese cake, monja, and okonomiyaki) and Hiroo course (¥4,500 – adds prawn teppanyaki and dessert to the lighter course), as well as an à-la-carte menu (all ¥800 - ¥1,200). We started our menu with a tomato salad that was stacked up like the Tower of Babel. The steak cubes arrived coated with ground sesame, and the chef quickly and skillfully grilled them in front of us. Next came what the menu calls “chicken-cheese”: fresh tomato, negi and chicken are cooked and diced on the teppan, then covered with celery cubes and blue cheese. The result is simply delicious! On to the monja – the liquid-type okonomiyaki that can look so unappetizing in other places. But here it is mostly shredded cabbage in a dashi-batter, then combined on the teppan with katsuobushi and other ingredients. After a few minutes it is ready to be eaten with the provided metal spatula. The main dish of course is okonomiyaki, artfully prepared into bite-sized pieces, and decorated with a little surprise. Everyone eats with a fork here, which feels a little bit strange with the yaki soba at the end of the meal. A few interesting drinks are also on the menu, e.g. the fruit tomato chū or the tsukimi squash, based on 4 different citrus fruits (all drinks ¥400 - ¥600). Wines from ¥4,500.5-4-12 Hiroo, Shibuya-ku, 03-3441-9797. http://www.tsuki-mi.com/The "little surprise" mentioned above is chef Sekimoto squirting mayonnaise from about 3m away, never missing the target!
