gameguider Posted November 3, 2007 Report Share Posted November 3, 2007 Hi, I tried to reinstall Windows a few weeks ago, and I thought it had gone smoothly at first, but then I found that it had only overwritten the previous installation, and I could open all other files from before I reinstalled. This was a dissappointment, but I shrugged it off, as it didn't use too much diskspace, and it wasn't causing any problems. But then I tried to run .exe files, and my Sims 2 game. It came up with an error message: something about Direct X 9.0c not being there or whatever. I installed that, but it still hasn't worked. On some .exe files, it says that my graphics card doesn't reach the requirements to run the application, but it should do, as it always worked before. Do I need to install graphics drivers? Because I don't have any CDs with it on.Can someone tell me how to completely reinstall Windows, so it looks like new and deletes all previous installations, if there is no solution to my problem about Direct X? If you need any files saving, back them up before you begin. Make sure you have all the things you will need afterwards (like ISP details etc.). You will need your AV/FW software handy (on a disc preferably) as you should really install these before you get the updates from Microsoft after the format.You will need to set the boot sequence to boot from CD first in the BIOS before you begin.During the reformat you delete the partition that XP is on (usually 'C:' and using 'd' for delete in the settings) and then format the partition in NTFS.After this the software will install and start up as normal (usually takes around 40mins or so).After Windows is installed I would suggest installing your AV + FW software, setting up your modem (username + password if needed etc.) and then going to Windows Update for the updates (this could take a while as there have been alot of updates since SP2 and even more since SP1).For your graphic drivers you need to go to the site of the company who makes it, ATI/nVidia etc. This can be done after as Windows should install a driver that will get you going. Direct-X can be either downloaded from Microsoft or some games have updates on their install discs when you install them.Hope this helps a little ;) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
