LAC not available or crashes explorer

I have had this issue with many Windows 2000 workstations.

When I right click on My Network Places and choose properties, that opens the Network Connections window. In some workstations, the Local Area Connection (LAC) icon is gone. Nothing there. However, that workstation is on the network and working fine.

However, on other systems, the LAC is there but when I try to go into the properties of it, the error comes up about explorer.exe, send error to microsoft, then explorer dies and closes out the window.

Aside from reinstalling the OS, how can I correct or repair the network issues?
