Regedit minor foulup

I recently (bout half an hour ago) installed a new game on my computer, and after installation I tried it but had some errors.

So I googled around abit and found it was a common error that others have had, the game devs had not yet fixed it but sugested another solution which was to edit some premissions in regedit.

The instruktions looked as follow.

1.) From the start menu click run

2.) At the command prompt type: regedit

and then click on run

3.) A screen should pop up with directory screen similiar to the windows explorer

4.) Scroll through the directory tree until you locate the folder: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

4.)Right click on the folder and then click permissions

5.)Click on the Group or User name: ADMINSTRATORS (if it does not exist click on ADD then type in ADMINSTRATORS then hit OK. Then click on it. In my case there was only one group or user name available. It was called EVERYONE. I am not sure if this was how it always was or it got changed when I loaded the game. I am assuming that the game does not recognize a user name or group called EVERYONE so that is why the game would not run)

6.)Then click the "Allow" box for "Full Control".

7.) Click APPLY then OK and then close the regedit window.

8.) Restart the computer.

9.) Relaunch the game

so I tried that, changed the premissoins for the two usergroups "Users" and "power users" to full controll and restarted my computer.

When it started up again it went really really really slow so to say, at first I didn't think windows was gonna start at all, so I pressed ctrl alt del (by reflex) and got up taskmanager, from there I shose new task and regedit, which opened without a problem. after a while the UI (startmenu icons) popped up, but I didn't apear to really be able to do anything with it, couse if I did whatever I clicked fooze up and stoped responding.

but anyway, I managed to fire up the browser with the taskmanager and here I am.

Anyone know anything that can be done to reverse whatever I did?

System Restore? Restore from backup?

I would be on to the makers of the software in the first instance - quickly!. They shouldn't be marketing products that are known to be faulty. Editing the Registry is not for the faint hearted and for a software developer to suggest that as a way of rectifying his mistakes shows a lack of competence and a bigger lack of concern for the customer.

another question then. how do I do a system restore? the only "effective" way I have of starting programs is through taskmanager with the new task button

Are you able to get into Safe Mode during bootup?

You should be able to do a System Restore from there.

Before editing the registry, even experts should always make a registry backup: ERUNT.
