Mysterious Vista memory problems

More and more frequently recently, I have experienced serious problems with Windows Vista, typically well into a session with several applications running. Examples are a lack of menus on a newly created window, a menu item not responding, an application not running when I try to start it, or explicit errors that suggest I have run out of memory. Closing windows or applications usually temporarily solves the problem

The implication from this would appear to be that there is not enough memory, but taking a look at the memory situation suggests there is some more obscure problem. My PC has 2Gb of RAM and is configured to use a 6Gb swapfile. Today's errors occurred when I was using 57% of the RAM and 2.5 Gb of swapfile, so there was a lot of memory of both types available.

Does anyone know what might be going wrong with Vista here, and how it might be fixed?
