Bazman76
Hi,There recently put together a new PC it had been running perfectly. Then over the past couple of days it has been incredibly slow in starting up. I mean it is taking at least 3* as long? It's actually the very early section of the boot that is taking the longest. When the black XP screen appears with the little line that goes round repeatedly from left to right, it starts moving very slowly initially. Once you get into windows its not that much slower so I don't think its to do with the number of programs at start up?In addition to this the fan seems to be continually "reving up" without ever really getting going I had not noticed this before. The PC is OK when started, but I am very put out by this slow starting.I recently went to the microsoft website and downloaded a host of updates that they recoemmended (about 97 in all).So I'm guesing this is related but I only took the ones they strongly recommended?Anyway to get my PC back up to speed would be greatly appreciated.Baz
-pops-
Reluctance to start could be due to an under-powered or failing power supply unit.Much like a jet aircraft, a computer requires maximum power at take-off and if the PSU is unable to supply this, the startup may be prolonged or it may not happen at all. What power is the PSU and what does it have to power up at the start? -pops-
There should be sufficient power there but, there could be as you suggest, burn in failure. Are you able to swap out with another PSU just as a test?

Are you able to swap out with another PSU just as a test?no sadly not.Thing is I have been using PSU for about 6 months fault free and have not added any new hardware (save for printer but that won;t affect start up). Moreover I can still run very demanding games at full whack once PC is up and running I think this would make more use of Graphics card than start up? And it is an extremely power hungry device? All in I am not convinced it is PSU?Are there any other possibilities I can explore??Baz
-pops-
More than once I've had a PSU that didn't have enough "oomph" to start without several attempts but, once going, seemed perfectly OK. I don't have any more suggestions but stick around, I'm sure someone else will be along soon.

-pops-
Here's the Wiki reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BootVis make of it what you wish. Personally, I found in previous Windows incarnations, BootVis didn't do very much. You might be interested in this from the "horses mouth" http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/syspe...ot/default.mspx
