JPEG's opening in ie7 when I dont want them to

Since my pc has been updated to ie7 all the local pictures now open in internet explorer when I don't want them to. I have checked the settings in folder options and JPEG's are set set to open with windows picture and fax viewer anyone know how i can stop them opening in ie7?

Hi Devonian, and welcome.

Right click on any jpeg, and choose the option "Open With" instead of "Open".

Do not choose any of the options that you see there. Instead, click on "Choose Program"

Now highlight the program you wish the jpeg to open with. (In your case Windows Picture and Fax Viewer)

Finally put a tick in the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" Click OK.

You should now find that your jpeg's have associated themselves with the program you have chosen.

Thanks for the reply. I ahve done some further checking and found that pictures do actually open with the selected program (windows picture and fax viewer) when I open them directly. However when I open them via hyperlinks from with excel (which is what I do most of the time) they still open in an explorer window.

Any further thoughts?

Hi again, - if of course you are still there !!

Yes I have had some further thoughts on this. Firstly I've got to say that I do not use IE7 so I haven't been able to poke around in there to see if there are any settings for file association. My line of thought was that the change from IE6 to IE7 must have somehow altered file associations and possibly the change was in the registry.

I started to think and search from the direction of hyperlink in Excel to wherever that may lead to and found that other people had similar issues to you, with hyperlinks opening up pictures in unwanted applications.

Unfortunately the cure seems to be altering the registry settings, something I do not really like to suggest to people. I will give you a link to the full article and a cameo text of the actual edit needed for the registry, and let you make your own mind up whether you can tackle the complexity of it. (I'm not talking down to you here, it's just that I dont know your level of computer expertise.)

If you are going to make alterations to the registry, please make a backup of registry settings before you start. and make sure you fully understand how to reinstate your previous settings.

This is the edit needed for the registry: First, create a System Restore point, then Start, Run regedit. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Internet and create a new DWORD value named ForceShellExecute. Double-click on this and give it a value of one, then close the Registry editor.

Before you go ahead with this wait a while to see if anybody else comes up with a different answer to the problem.
