Blank Popup Box on taskbar is freezing things? (dont have a better way

I'm using Windows Vista on an HP Pavilion laptop.

It's not even a year old yet.. about 7 or 8 months old.

I'm having this problem with it however. Every once in a while there's this blank white box that pops up on the taskbar on the right side. It pops up for maybe a millisecond at a time, but it's continuous, and does not stop until I restart the computer.

This wouldn't bother me normally, but every time that box pops up, it stops what I'm typing, and to continue typing I have to re-click in the text area. Since the box pops up every couple seconds, I'm finding myself having to type a letter, click back in the box - type one letter, click, type a letter click. It gets INCREDIBLY frustrating. It also disables the scroll function on the touch pad.. I have to actually click and drag to be able to scroll.

Basically, this pops up and resets everything I'm doing every couple of seconds, so it's absolutely impossible to get anything done.

This doesn't happen every time I use the computer, but it's starting to happen more and more often, and if somebody has a solution, I would GREATLY appreciate the help so I can stop it before it gets so bad that I can't even use my new computer.

Please help me rid my computer of this little demon box. =(

i have attached a screenshot of the box:

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

I don't know what it is, but let's start with asking some questions and trying some things out.

  • Do you have an active anti-virus software, and is it up-to-date?
  • Do you have anti-spyware, and it it up-to-date?
  • Can you run Task Manager (keep running) and check what's active when the pop-up occurs?

Just to make sure your system is free of malware, run an online scan on http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ - make sure you use v6.6 on Vista.
