cant install SP2 or Explorer 6 or 7 - "Catch 22"

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post. Could anyone please help me?

Here's the "Catch 22". Many software aps require Service Pack 2. When I try to download Service Pack 2, I get errors saying I need Internet Explorer 6 or higher. When I try to upgrade to IE6 or IE7, I get a message saying I need Service Pack 2.

It was funny at first; not so funny now.

Anyone ever had this problem or does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried to upgrade via Microsoft Update ?

If you dont mind doing a fresh install, do a slipstreamed winXP disk?

I was able to download IE6 (Thanks, Boris). But now, when I tried to download SP2, I get:

"This update has already been applied or is included in an update that has already been applied."

That seems great, because it would seem to mean I have SP2.

However, I'm still unable to download programs. For example, I bought an I-Pod Shuffle and tried to download I-Tunes, and get this:

"The I-Tunes installer requires Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later."

Is it in the wrong directory and can't be found? Do you mean fresh install of Windows, or just SP2? Not familiar with "slip streamed disk".

To make long story longer, I had a problem where computer would only boot to a certain point and freeze (to screen saver but no icons). I didn't do a complete re-install, I re-loaded Windows XP to another file. Now when my computer boots, I have 2 versions of XP, and I select the one that works.

Maybe that's why programs can't find SP2, or it was a dirty install?

Sorry about the long post.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My shuffle sits forlorn in its box.

Right-click My Computer | Properties | tab General; you should see your exact Windows version under the System header.

I am still wondering: why are you not updating using Microsoft Update? Could it be that you don't have a genuine version of Windows?

I have Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002.

My automatic update feature wasn't working because clock would not synchronize. But I did download straight from Windows Download Center official site.

Maybe fresh install of entire OS from original disks, and then update? I don't know.

Really would like to avoid that.

Nah, that's all it says.

I'll try Microsoft Update tomorrow, no time tonight. Last time I tried there was a problem with that, too. My clock won't synchronize with their website or any other, but maybe that was only problem with automatic updating.

Anyway, thanks for help. I'll add new post after next attempt.
