mirrorrorrim448
HeyI looked for a solution to this problem, but I really don't have time to look much more (I go to college from 8am - 3pm and work from 3pm - 1am which leaves no research time after studying). Specs: HP NotebookDuo Core T5300 (1.73 GHZ)2 Gigs RAMNvida Geforce Go 760032 Bit Windows Vista Home Premium(I don't want to downgrade operating systems :P Also, Im trying to avoid a reformat)Problem: First off, No I do NOT use Limewire or any P2Ps nor do I allow Active X controls etc etc (on this PC). This problem occurred even though I haven't downloaded anything in a while. When Windows boots I am taken to the log in screen. I enter my password, but instead of the desktop loading the screen stays black. I open the task manager and explorer.exe is running but nothing is happening. I closed explorer.exe and re-run it, but no start up programs launched and the computer wouldn't connect to the internet (even though the desktop launched). I ran a few virus scanners, including Windows Live One Care (which I know sucks :S). The problem is, every time I reboot this happens. The only way I can find around it is to boot in safe mode, run system restore, then let it automatically reboot. I downloaded another update yesterday but the computer still does the same thing. Funny thing is that if I launch system restore to restore the PC as it was yesterday (which is after the problem started occurring) it still boots fine (unless I don't run the restore first). The situation is even more annoying because... if I do a restore and let it reboot itself then I log in it works fine, but I can reboot without doing a restore and it won't work again. Bottom line: It only fully boots when I do a system restore (If I boot with a restore and immediately try to boot without it, it won't work). I tried all the start up tools diagnostics that vista has and it says nothing is wrong :S Thanks :D
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Welcome to the Windows Forum.Have you also checked for other malware like trojans, spyware, keyloggers, or root kits?If you don't have any anti-spyware installed, try to run an online scan from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ - make sure you select v6.6 for Vista. (It seems to have some trouble loading right now.)
Dencandy
Very strange! I assume you've done System Restore to before this problem started and it still recurs?Apart from Pat's suggestion, have you run CheckDisk (I'm assuming Vista has this) to check for bad sectors which may be preventing some parts of the system from loading? Also, does the start of this problem coincide with you updating any drivers or installing new programmes? If so, try uninstalling them one by one and see if this solves the problem.Does Vista have a Repair function, like XP has, and have you tried it? mirrorrorrim448
Hey,1.) I did a system restore the first time the problem occurred (effectively restoring it to a date which did not have the problem)2.) I've ran every diagnostic tool on Vista3.) No Drivers or Updates were new around the time the problem started occurring. About a week before the problem I installed an audio card update4.) Yes I tried the repair fx5.) Checked for spyware also. Used: AdAware, Spybot, Windows Live One Care (Virus and Spyware), and trend micro said "HouseCall did not find any potential threats on your computer. Make sure you run HouseCall once a week to keep your PC clean and malware free."Thanks for the help though :S I'm out of ideas lol.

mirrorrorrim448
Well, I emailed Microsoft, so we will see how that goes. They'll probably just say they can't help or something. Meh, Maybe I should just use Linux :P (I refuse to use an Apple). If they actually give me a solution I'll let you know for future reference. Dencandy
If they actually give me a solution I'll let you know for future reference.Well, thanks, but they don't usually. They usually tell you to search for it yourself. It's often easy to find the answer, it's implementing it that takes time. So wait till you get a couple of free hours & you're wide awake.
