My PC keeps restarting

My Windows XP PC keeps restarting itself for no apparent reason.

It happens when i try to SHUT DOWN,

when i close a game,

and at other TOTALLY RANDOM times

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

Win XP and Win 2000 have a default setting to restart at just about any error.

It makes things difficult to analyse when it restarts the computer.

If you go to: Settings / Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery / Settings.

Make sure the box is UNCHECKED where it says "Automatically Restart" under System Failure.

Next time it happens, write down the error message displayed and post it here.

Some possibilities are :-

1. Overheating - Any temp software installed, with motherboard or 3rd party? If not you could enter the BIOS at startup and check the temperatures there after it shuts down. ("delete" button repeatedly as it begins startup) - Do you clean your comp for all the dust they collect internally? This can cause processors to over heat when the cooling veins on top of the processor get blocked with dust!).

2. Virus/ Spyware etc. - Do you have up-to-date software installed? Do you check them regularily?

3. Failing hardware.

4. Software failure.

Have you looked in event viewer to see any errors? (click start > run > and type "eventvwr.msc" without the ""). Any red items could be a cause if the times are the same as the shutdowns?
