Replaced P III CPU XP Hangs

I had to replace a faulty P III CPU. It's an older machine running home automation and weather services. It's an Intel MB and I replaced it with the same speed and type CPU.

Windows XP Pro SP2 now hangs when the machine boots up. I tried repairing the Windows installation, but it hangs after the restart to continue the installation. I would rather not have to do a fresh install, unless absolutely necessary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably a pointless question - but you have used fresh thermal paste between the heatsink and new cpu ?

Yes, I did. The CPU is not heating up because I can do a CNTRL-ALT-DEL and it reboots just fine. If I try to reboot Windows in the safe mode, it hangs up in the same place each time. So, I renamed the driver it was trying to load (BTH something.sys) and it just hung up on the next one.
