Has it by any chance anthing to do with the installation of SP3?

If so, did you take a backup before the installation?

Could you possibly uninstall it by using Safe Mode?

Pat Willener has posted an excellent guide of the suggested steps to take before installing SP3.

It is well worth studying it before accepting the 'upgrade'.

i dont think it has anything to do with sp3 as i have been running for a while with sp3 and no problems.

for some reason all is back to normal.
Good news.

Very glad to hear it. :D

i think it was because i installed firefox3 beta,i have now gone back to firefox2.

Well, if that proves to be the answer, then I am sure that anyone else with the same problem with be very grateful for your confirmation. :)
