WINDOWS APPLICATION START UP PROBLEM, HELP.

I am having a problem with my pc on start up. When I start up, my applications don't load automatically anymore, and if i click on an icon, it goes transparent, and doesn't open, it will only open if i right click, and open. Also i can uninstall some apps like MSN, it says something about being in Safe mode, but i checked and im not in safe mode. Also apps are acting weird, I tunes says it cant recognize my ipod, and my quick launch menu always disappears when i restart. Can someone please help me. Thank you.

First, I suggest you do a System Restore to a time before these problems started.

If that doesn't sort out the problem, run Check Disk to check your hard disk for faulty sectors. To do that open My Computer, rt click on the disk or partition which holds your Windows system files (usually C:); select Properties; select Tools, then Error Checking; tick both boxes, then OK. You will then be told you must shut your computer down as Error Checking must be done before full boot, so just click on Start, select Shut Down and select Re-start.

Your computer will turn off, re-start, then begin error-checking on a black screen. This can easily take upto 30 minutes.

Even if this sorts out your problems, run Check Disk on the other hard disks or partitions that you use. These should not require you to shut down & re-start as they do not contain Windows system files.

How old is your hard disk? If it's more than 5 years old and the computer has had a lot of use, you should think about replacing it.

my main hard disk is around 4 years old. this is my only hard drive with all my system files and personal files. I wonder is anything at risk by running this Check Disk? Because i have important files on my hard drive. I also tried running the System Restore a few time to a few different dates, and it doesn't work, it says its unable to complete the restore..so...I don't know...Im running a virus scan, which someone recommended...im just waiting for that to finish. to see what to do next.

Since you have clearly a problem with your computer, the first thing to do is to take a backup of your important data.

After you run CHKDSK, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and run a full online scan. Use v6.6, as it is easier and faster than v6.5.

Get an External HDD (if you can afford one) or some DVD-RWs (assuming you have a DVD-Rewriter) and backup the important data to it. Then proceed with whatever experiments you may want to conduct ;)
