Installing SP3 = Blue screen

Recommended Posts

Yep... I have installed the SP3, but after the restart I had to do, right after the loading screen I get a blue screen. Here is the error code I got from that screen:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E(0x0000005, 0xBAA78756, 0xBAA78756, 0xBACC342C, 0xBACC3128)

So now I'm back on SP2 asking for help

A bit more information that can be of help (though there's some in my profile):

OS: Windows XP Media Center Edition

BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBios v6.00PG

CPU: AMD Athlon x2 4600+ 2.4 Ghz

RAM: 3Gb

Graphics card: Nvidia 7600 GS

Thank you in advance for those that can help me :).

Edit: If I placed at the wrong place, please move, I'm not used to this kind of forums.

Well, as you will be guessing, this is not the only forum where I asked. I didn't use any of your methods, I used the following one :).

I don't think updating your BIOS will have any effect at all, this stop code 0x0000007E related to SP3 seems to be pretty well known, do you have an AMD CPU?

See this article on Assist-X, but here's the short version:

It seems some manufacturers have used the same Windows image for both their Intel and AMD models, and have just disabled the intelppm.sys on the AMD ones. Apparently SP3 has sometimes been enabling that driver again, resulting in the BSOD.

Boot into Safe mode, open regedit and go to the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm\Start

Change the 'Start' value to 4, then reboot the system.

Hopefully this will cure the problem.

This actually worked, so I guess they didn't fully do their job at changing the windows setting to fit the AMD processor at the manufacture.

Note: Assist-X is the website she and some of her friends and forumers started to help them help others.
