Where did it go?

I use Word 2000 regularly. Last time I opened it the File Edit View History etc row at the top of the toolbars had gone. I can't find how to get it to show. It's not listed as a toolbar. Please help.

You could try.....

Right-click on an open space, at the top where it should be, that should bring up a list of tool bars.

If you select Standard, I think it should return for you. :D

Sorry, PaulT, it's the Menu Bar which you need.

Right-click the top of the Word Window, choose Customise, select the Tool Bar Tab from the top, the check the box for Menu Bar.

Thanks Irene. I followed your instructions, and found that in the Toolbars list 'Menu' was already checked. Funnily it won't uncheck either. All the other toolbars in the list will toggle on and off. Menu is stuck On, but the line 'File, Edit, ' etc still isn't showing.

Do other Office programs behave the same way? Can you try running 'Detect and Repair' (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA010548851033.aspx).

Thanks Pat. I used the original CD and chose Repair.

It went through without hitch.

Opened Word and still no sign of the top row "File Edit View ..."

I then got desperate and used the CD to uninstall Office, and then reinstalled it.

Guess what ........

still no top line on the toolbars.

That's why I asked earlier if other Office components behave the same way.

Anyway, can you try Alt+V, then Alt+T to see if you can activate the menu bar (Irene's post)? I'm not sure if it works if the menu bar is missing.

F1 will bring up the Main Help facility, which unfortunately I don't think is what you need.

Alt-H would open Help on the Menu Bar if it existed.

I suppose you could try the Alt-H method, just in case the Menu Bar is just 'hidden'.

Sorry I didn't answer the question, Is the File menu visible on all Office apps. Yes, it is OK for all. It's only Word that's lost it.

Using the Alt shortcut I accessed Detect and Repair, ran it, but it didn't bring back the File .... line.

I read thru the page you suggested Arene, and got lost with references to /a and /m etc.

Never mind, using the Alt shortcuts I can access such things as Mailmerge, which I use often, so I can live without the File toolbar being visible.

One other solution - I've got a copy of Office Home and Student 2007 which came with my new laptop. Do you think uninstalling Office 2000 and installing the 2007 version would work?
