Chuckdood Posted May 17, 2008 Report Share Posted May 17, 2008 I bought a Dell GX150 off ebay for my kids (used). It has a W2000 COA but I just installed a copy of W98SE which is fine for them. I would now like to upgrade a little but don't want to buy XP if I can get by with a used copy of 2000. There are some out there on the bay but I'm wondering if it will take the number from my COA on the machine or if I need the number that goes with the specific software. The sellers all say the software has been removed from a machine and it's clean. Will 2000 reinstall on a different computer, unlike XP? Thanks for any info. I don't need any "unofficial" service pack; I have SP4 plus all updates that were released since then. I do not see any problem with this; or what did I misunderstand...? pa1916 Posted May 26, 2008 Report Share Posted May 26, 2008 If your kids have access to the internet then W98 is an unsupported system now and is unsafe and is wide open.I have run W2000 for years never had a problem you will require SP4 quite a big download but not long on broadband plus a number of further updates you will require your MOBO disk for drivers as W2000 can never find anything unlike WXP.You will find some hardware and software available will not be supported under W2000.
