Windows Xp

Hello everyone, This is my first post here and would like to say I'm happy to be here but as of right now i have a BIG problem.

About a week ago after leaving my desktop on for about a week. I go to reboot it and everything seems fine until after i log in. After doing that all that comes up is my mouse pointer and my background picture and nothing else. No start menu, no task bar, no icons. So far I have tried the basics but my system restore is gone and safe mode will not fully boot either. I go to task manager and try explorer.exe and It's no good but i can start any program from task manager. I'm guessing I lost something in explorer.

One other thing, for some reason I am not able to remove vista as a boot option on this machine. I had vista on it for a while but I'm building a pc now.

I don't think this has anything to do with my problem but it is a PITA.

If you need more info just ask

Thanks

Let's first look at your main problem: can you boot into Last Known Good Configuration?

No not at all

It goes through the motions but still comes up the same way, that was my first thought also. Then tried system restore by route of task manager but for some reason it lost it as well, and that is something I always keep on. I also ran check disk.

I was about to suggest that the hard drive is about to expire but, as you have done a chkdsk, it seems to rule that out.

Do you have a full system backup? If yes, then trying reinstalling the whole system from the backup. It may be that there is a "fatal" corruption of Windows files that is preventing it from loading.

I have a backup.I made it several months ago with acronis and put it away so it's not updated but thats ok, so I put it in and the pc reports it but it will only go as far as a black screen and a cursor for some reason. So i'm thinking bad memory. I pull my battrey to check it cause when I do it counts out my memory one MB at a time and it counts all of it and I figure if it counts 1,2,3,4-------------256MB it should be ok.If i could somehow get the original to work I would be dancing in the isles cause as far as doing a system repair I'm not sure if my Xp disc will do that. It's not pirated or anything like that but my wife used to work at Compaq before H.P. bought them out and it is a legit corporate disc and does not start up the same way a consumer disc does. It does not have the install, repair etc... splash screen. If it's on here i would not know how to get to it with this disc. If that route can be done....sad to say i might just have to download a copy and use it just for a repair and then destroy it.

:( :( :( :(
