Windows - Delayed Write File

Hi there,

I Have 3 internal SATA hard drives on my machine - 1 for windows, 1 for all my files and work etc and 1 for back up.

I'm having a problem whre I get an error message (in one of the little speach bubbles from the system tray) that says:

Windows - Delayed Write File

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:\System Volume Information. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

This message usually occurs a few times, sometimes instead of E:\System Volume Information, is says E:\ and then a load of symbols - dollar sign etc. I'll post the exact message next time it occurs.

After a few messages, the drive is no longer mounted and is not visable in my computer, however it always comes back after a reboot.

It is nearly always drive E: however it did occur to drive D: once.

I have done several full scans for viruses / spyware. I have scanned all volumes for errors and defragmented all volumes. I have also opened up my machine to check none of the sata cables are loose.

My system is:

Win XP Home - just installed SP3, however this problem was occuring before I installed that.

pentium 4 2.93GHz

1Gb RAM

3 SATA hard drives in motherboard slots 1,2 and 3 (of 4)

If anyone has any ideas I would be most grateful as I am out of them.

I realise that this is of no immediate help but the same thing is happening to an external eSATA drive on my Vista computer. At some point during the day the drive just vanishes - even though I have not accessed it to add or modify any files. It cannot be found by Explorer or in the Control Panel. A reboot finds it again.
