shriekingviolet Posted June 10, 2008 Report Share Posted June 10, 2008 2 weeks ago I bought a new Compaq Presario SR5410F at Circuit City. I installed Mozilla Firefox, Zone Alarm, AVG 8.0 and Spybot and everything was running great. 2 days later it began shutting itself down and restarting. The screen went black and a message appeared "windows has detected a problem and is shutting down to protect the system". There's a lot more text, but the message always disappears before I can read more than a few words, then the computer restarts. After this happened a few times, I returned it to the store and got another unit of the same model. I set up and installed everything again and after 1 or 2 days the same problem occurred. I took the second unit back to Circuit City and had Firedog look at it. They couldn't get it to duplicate the problem and could only suggest it might be overheating and I should give it more ventilation and if the problem still happened it's probably a defect in the model and I should return it. I moved it to a more open location and it still shuts down. It doesn't seem to have any relation to room temperature, and the units fans are working. It's only been used for surfing the Internet and this happens once or twice almost every time it's used. The problem seems to happen when it's opening a webpage or going from one part of a website to another and there's no pattern. Sometimes it restarts after running for 5 minutes, sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes hours and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. It's like a jack-in-the-box. :) After it restarts there's a message box on the screen saying windows has recovered and has a link to view details. I'd take it back with a written letter of complaint for the record. I brought a Compaq laptap last year & wouldn't recommend it to anyone. When I opened the manual the first thing I noticed was 4 pages how to use it, 10 pages dealing with problems!
