Another chkdsk question

This is related to my first post about my repeating chkdsk problem.

I've been doing a ton of research and have learned an enormous amount, but i'm still a "super-newbie". Apparently this is one of the biggest problems to plague windows. I've found hundreds of posts but no definite answer. Although i've learned that it is possibly a hardware problem (power source, usb, cd drive etc.), and has nothing to do with agp440 (which it hangs on in safe mode), still seems like if i could just disable chkdsk it might solve the problem. At least enough to get into windows and recover my data (still keeping Puppy Linux as a last resort).

I've seen helpful posts that seem to say you CAN disable chkdsk from the recovery console, but it's not spelled out step by step. Just wondering if anyone has done it or knows that it can be done. Remember most users facing this problem CANNOT boot into ANY safe modes like me, only recovery console. So if someone can help a retard out and list how to disable chkdsk from recovery (if this can indeed be done), it would be greatly appreciated as at least a first step for me.

As you can boot into safe mode, you do0 not need the recovery console.

First make a back up of your registry then follow the instructions below.

Disabling Chkdsk - Windows XP

1. Run the Registry Editor (regedt32.exe)

2. Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following subkey:

\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Session Manager

3. Change the BootExecute entry to:

autocheck autochk *

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

If you need to use the recovery console, you need the DISABLE command.

Disable disables a Windows system service or driver. The variable service_or_driver is the name of the service or driver that you want to disable. When you use this command to disable a service, the command displays the service's original startup type before it changes the type to SERVICE_DISABLED. Note the original startup type so that you can use the enable command to restart the service.
